What is a Mobile Notary?

A mobile notary, also known as a mobile notary public, or a traveling notary, is a state commissioned notary public that travels to the location of the signer for the purpose of notarizing their documents.

A mobile notary will travel to just about any location. For example:

  • Hospitals, nursing homes, rehab centers, assisted living facilities etc

  • Work place

  • Parking lots

  • Image of coffee shot
    Parks

  • Homes

  • Restaurants, coffee shops

There are any number of situations where a signer cannot go to a notary, such as illness or injury, or perhaps one’s work schedule doesn’t allow it. In these instances, having a mobile notary come to you provides a much needed service and convenience.

Each state governs what a mobile notary may or may not charge. In California, a notarization may not be more than $15 per signature. The travel fee charged is not regulated in California except to say that the mobile notary must disclose the travel fee amount to the signer. Often times, the travel fee is based on distance traveled and may also be influenced by time of day. For instance, if the notary appointment is scheduled during heavy traffic times, the mobile notary may charge a little more for the additional time it takes to get to and from the location.

My mobile notary business is based in Long Beach, CA. For single signature, single document notarization, my service area is small. It makes no sense to drive 30 min each way in that instance. The cost of travel fees to the client would be too expensive. They are better served hiring a mobile notary within their city. In the case of real estate documents and/or estate planning documents where there are several documents to be signed and notarized, I will travel much further to accommodate clients, often for a flat rate fee.
