There are times, however, when traveling to a notary is not convenient or even doable. Perhaps you’re
housebound, or the signer has mobility and/or health issues. Maybe the signer is in the hospital, a nursing facility, or rehab. It may be a case of not being able to leave work, or you have strange work hours that preclude you from visiting a notary public during regular business hours. Or maybe, you just like the convenience of a mobile notary coming to you. In these instances, a mobile notary is essential for getting the notarizations you need.

Choosing the right mobile notary is important for the following reasons:

  • A traveling notary who regularly makes hospital, nursing home, and/or assisted living visits understands that the signer may be uncomfortable, have limited mobility, sight, hearing etc, or is not feeling well overall. Consequently, the right mobile notary for the job will be patient, recognize that the signer may need extra time to sign, and will bring with her tools to assist the signer sign more comfortably.

  • An experienced mobile notary will be familiar with the majority of commonly notarized documents, such as power of attorney, advanced healthcare directives, vital records requests, and
the like. While, in the state of California, a mobile notary public is prohibited from giving advice on how to fill out any document, they can point to the information contained within the document so the signer can read for themselves what they are signing. Familiarity of commonly notarized documents can help streamline the signing process.

  • If you’re having your trust documents notarized, the right mobile notary is going to have experience with the estate package. If you’re in need of an additional witness for the signing of your will, often times, with advance notice, a seasoned mobile notary experienced in notarizing all the documents commonly associated with a trust, plus any additional documents as well. My experience in notarizing trust documents allows me to sit with an attorney’s client(s) with or without the attorney being present and the entire package is executed flawlessly. Even if you are crafting a DIY estate plan, you will still need it notarized. Choose a mobile notary who has handled many an estate package to get it notarized the right the first time.

  • A by-the-book mobile notary is someone who takes their public servant job seriously and will ensure that each signer is who they present themselves to be They keep a meticulous notary journal with a single line entry for every notarization. When a notary implements best practices, she mitigates the occurrence of fraud protecting not only you but the public in general.
